When taking a look at the roster of the Philadelphia Eagles, there aren’t any glaring holes. They are strong on both sides of the ball, and they should be among the best teams in the NFL once again in 2023.
If the Eagles were going to make any changes, they likely wouldn’t be any blockbuster deals. Instead, it would be to improve on the margins, upgrading the depth at certain positions to ensure they are covered in case of injury.
One player that Jake Rill of Bleacher Report believes could be a good fit for Philadelphia is free agent wide receiver, Sammy Watkins. The Eagles are set atop their depth chart with A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, one of the best wide receiver duos in the NFL.
However, the depth behind them is shaky. Last season, the No. 3 wide receiver was Quez Watkins, who caught 33 passes in 17 games for 354 yards and three touchdowns. Knowing that spot needed to be upgraded, the Eagles signed Olamide Zaccheus in free agency and the two have been battling it out in training camp.
Adding another veteran to the mix wouldn’t be the worst idea. Watkins has had trouble staying healthy in his career, but a part-time role as the No. 3 or 4 option at wide receiver could help keep him on the field.
“Sammy Watkins might be a good fit for Philadelphia, as his big-play potential may complement the skill sets of Brown and Smith in the offense. The 30-year-old Watkins could be in store for a bounce-back year after he had 325 yards and no touchdowns over 12 games in 2022 (nine with the Green Bay Packers and three with the Baltimore Ravens),” Rill wrote.
There is certainly little downside to adding more weapons around Jalen Hurts. The Eagles’ passing offense was very good last year, but being proactive and protecting against injury, instead of reactive, is how the Eagles have gotten to this position in the first place.
Adding S. Watkins, should Q. Watkins or Zaccheus not stand out the remainder of training camp, would be a shrewd move by Roseman. The No. 4 pick in the 2014 NFL Draft would bring some big play ability to the Eagles’ offense as well, as he averages 14.8 yards per reception in his career.
