The Philadelphia Eagles are heading into the 2023 season looking like one of the best teams in the NFL once again. Aftering winning the NFC last season but losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl, Philadelphia will be looking to go all the way this time around.
The Eagles made a few tweaks to their roster this offseason as a number of coaches and players departed. One of the things that needed to be changed was the quarterback depth behind Jalen Hurts.
Gardner Minshew had been the backup for the last two seasons but he followed offensive coordinator Shane Steichen to the Indianapolis Colts. The Eagles brought in Marcus Mariota as his backup, but Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report has suggested another quarterback for them to target.
In his opinion, Malik Willis of the Tennessee Titans would be an excellent pickup should Tennessee look to move on from him. Willis was a third-round pick out of Liberty in the 2022 NFL Draft but his standing on the roster is shaky as the Titans still have veteran Ryan Tannehill and traded up in the second round to pick Will Levis in the 2023 NFL Draft.
While the start of his career was underwhelming, as Willis struggled in relief of Tannehill as a rookie, he was projected to be a developmental player. Giving up on such a player, especially given the long-term upside Willis could have, would certainly be surprising. But, with a new regime in place in Tennessee, a chance could come.
With the Eagles, the Liberty product wouldn’t face any pressure as being a franchise savior, as some thought he could be with the Titans. Instead, he could go at his own pace with development and learn from Hurts, who many people doubted upon his entry into the NFL, too.
Willis’ skill set also fits what the Eagles want to do offensively. Were Hurts to ever miss time, the game plan wouldn’t have to change very much with Willis stepping into the lineup. He can handle all of the read-pass options that the team runs with Hurts given how athletic he is.
