Fantasy Football outlook for Colts QB Philip Rivers in 2020

What to expect from Rivers in fantasy football in 2020

Again, Rivers concluded the 2019 campaign as the 18th highest-scoring quarterback in fantasy football, scoring just 235.5 points. Even Ryan Fitzpatrick and Derek Carr were able to score more fantasy points than Rivers a season ago.

Nevertheless, Rivers is joining a new offense that is loaded with talent, similar to what he had in Los Angeles. With T.Y. Hilton, Michael Pittman Jr., Parris Campbell, and Zach Pascal, Rivers is going to have plenty of opportunities to pass the ball. Not to mention, he also has Jack Doyle, Marlon Mack, and Jonathan Taylor as well.

After joining the Colts, the former first-round pick definitely becomes a more intriguing quarterback to consider in fantasy leagues. Especially since he’ll be playing all eight of his home games inside a dome.

We’ve seen the likes of Drew Brees and Matt Ryan benefit from playing their home games in a dome. So where should you consider drafting Rivers in re-draft leagues this offseason?

While he should have a better year than 2019, Rivers still has turnover concerns at this point in his career. From 2011-2019, the North Carolina State product has thrown 15+ interceptions five times and 20+ interceptions three times.

Just because he’s switched uniforms, doesn’t mean he’s going to change the way he plays. Since becoming a starter in the NFL, Rivers has always been a gunslinging quarterback that is not afraid to take chances. As a result, there’s always a chance that a play ends in a turnover.

Rivers should be considered a quarterback that could be taken as a starter in deeper leagues. It’s hard to draft him before guys like Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, Kyler Murray, Drew Brees, Russell Wilson, and Deshaun Watson. Even Dak Prescott, Tom Brady, and Aaron Rodgers should be considered before him.

That is already nine quarterbacks that should be taken before him in re-draft leagues. In reality, there are at least another handful of quarterbacks that should be selected before the Colts new quarterback.

Still, that doesn’t mean that Rivers isn’t in for a much-improved season from his dismal 2019 season. It shouldn’t be too tough for him to do better than 23 touchdowns and 20 interceptions.

So all in all, Rivers should be a fantasy-relevant quarterback again in 2020. At the same time, some people may want to temper their expectations on Rivers when it comes to fantasy football.
