The Denver Broncos are expected to release Russell Wilson in the coming weeks, and a former NFL quarterback thinks he may have difficulty finding a job if and when that happens.
During an appearance on ESPN’s Get Up on Friday morning, Tim Hasselbeck said that Wilson may be out of the NFL in 2024.
“Listen, I think there is a chance Russell Wilson is out of football [next season],” Hasselbeck said. “I’m not sure there’s definitely a landing spot for him. He’s older. I think it’s fair to say that his game has diminished. I think, in terms of the leadership component that you typically want from a veteran quarterback that comes in, I think it’s fair to have questions about that. So, he’s made a lot of money, he’s due a lot of money, so I don’t know that there’s definitely a spot for him that he would take.”
While Wilson certainly does not seem to be the same signal-caller from his days with the Seattle Seahawks, claiming that he may find himself out of a job next season is probably jumping the gun.
After all, Wilson was hardly bad this past season, throwing for 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions while completing 66.4 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 98.
Yes, he was benched for the final two games of the regular season, but that was only because he refused to defer his $37 million injury guarantee.
Clearly, the stench of Wilson’s debut campaign with the Broncos in 2022 is still following him, as the 35-year-old trudged through the worst season of his NFL career that year.
However, the nine-time Pro Bowler rebounded in 2023, and seeing how many teams currently need a quarterback, there seems to be very little reason to believe that Wilson will not land somewhere unless he asks for an exorbitant amount of money.
We’ll see what becomes of Russell Wilson soon.
