Expectations for the New York Jets have skyrocketed for the 2023 season. That is what happens when you acquire a future Hall of Famer to take over your offense as the Jets did with Aaron Rodgers.
Owner Woody Johnson made it clear that he wanted to see the team upgrade under center this offseason. Zach Wilson, the No. 2 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, has been a major disappointment thus far. Joe Flacco and Mike White werenât cutting it either, so Johnson wanted to see a change made.
General manager Joe Douglas obliged, making arguably the biggest splash of the offseason by bringing Rodgers in. He was far from the only change that was made, as the offense is going to look vastly different.
Not only has the personnel been adjusted, but the coaching staff was as well. Nathaniel Hackett, after a disastrous season as head coach of the Denver Broncos, is taking over as offensive coordinator for Mike LaFleur.
LaFleur was someone that head coach Robert Saleh believed in, but after watching his offense go without a touchdown in the final three games of the season, something had to be done. Bringing in Hackett, who has experience working with Rodgers, was the call.
That pairing is one that many people believe will bring the Jets a ton of success on the field in 2023. One of the people who has bought in as a believer is former NFL star cornerback, Richard Sherman.
During a recent episode of UNDISPUTED on FS1, Sherman made a bold proclamation about the Jets. He believes they are going to go all the way to the Super Bowl on the back of the Rodgers/Hackett pairing.
âAaron Rodgers and Nathaniel Hackett are like peanut butter & jelly. They had back-to-back MVP seasons [together],â Sherman said when debating about the Jets being a Super Bowl contender.
Hackett was the offensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers for three seasons, 2019-2021, before taking over the Broncosâ head coaching gig. It goes to show how important having a quarterback is, as Hackett has overseen only three top-10 offenses in eight seasons as a coordinator. On top of that, the Broncos had arguably the worst offense in the NFL with him as head coach.
But, whatever he does with Rodgers works. As Sherman noted, Rodgers won the MVP in back-to-back seasons with Hackett as his offensive coordinator. The Jets are hoping they can rekindle that magic in 2023 and beyond.
