The Pittsburgh Steelers are the betting favorites to land Russell Wilson this offseason, and former NFL wide receiver Chad Johnson concurs with the line.
During a recent episode of “The Night Cap” podcast, Johnson said that he heard Wilson will be heading to the Steelers once the Denver Broncos cut ties with him.
“We’ve got to work on the Steelers now,” Johnson said. “A little birdie told me, and I said this many shows ago, Russell Wilson’s coming on over to the Steelers.”
Pittsburgh’s rumored interest in Wilson is hardly surprising.
The Steelers are currently employing Kenny Pickett at the quarterback position, but the team certainly seems open to an improvement.
Pickett played in 12 games this past season before going down with an ankle injury. He was supposed to return later in the year, but ended up being benched in favor of Mason Rudolph.
Rudolph is slated to hit free agency next month, but even if he returns to Pittsburgh, a quarterback battle between Pickett and Rudolph would not exactly be scintillating.
Even with their issues under center in 2023, the Steelers still managed to go 10-7 and make the playoffs, indicating that they have a good roster that merely needs an upgrade at signal-caller.
Wilson is expected to be released by the Broncos after spending two seasons in Denver. He is coming off of a 2023 campaign in which he threw for 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions while completing 66.4 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 98.
The 35-year-old was benched for the final two games of the regular season after declining to defer his $37 million injury guarantee, foreshadowing his likely release in the coming weeks.
Wilson would unquestionably represent a significant boost at quarterback for the Steelers, who have some decent weapons on offense.
We’ll see what becomes of Russell Wilson soon.
