The New York Giants season hit a new low in Week 9. They lost to the Las Vegas Raiders in blowout fashion, 30-6, dropping their record to 2-7 on the season. Losing to a team who fired their head coach and general manager leading up to the game and named rookie Aidan O’Connell as their starting quarterback is certainly a tough look for the Giants.

But, given the situation at their quarterback position, it isn’t overly surprising they struggled so much. Daniel Jones was making his return to the lineup from a neck injury but he didn’t last long as he suffered an injury to his right knee..

He suffered a knee injury, which has been diagnosed as an ACL tear, ending his season. That forced Tommy DeVito into action for the second straight week as he was the only other active quarterback for the game.

DeVito was the backup because Tyrod Taylor was sidelined with an injury of his own. Taylor was hurt in Week 8 against the New York Jets when he injured his ribs. He was in the hospital early last week for evaluations.

The injury must have been severe enough that head coach Brian Daboll isn’t sure Taylor will get back on the field this season. He provided the brutal update on Monday afternoon, saying Taylor is uncertain to return this season. The update came via Underdog NFL on X, formerly known as Twitter.

This is a truly brutal development for the Giants, whose only other option at quarterback other than DeVito is Matt Barkley. He was signed to the team’s practice squad last week after Taylor was placed on IR and Jones was cleared to return and be the starter.

With their top two quarterbacks on the depth chart entering the season likely done for 2023, the next nine weeks could get very ugly in New York. There is no need to rush Taylor back from what is seemingly a serious injury as the franchise should already be turning their attention to 2024.

If Taylor does not return, he will end the 2023 campaign with a 1-2 record as a starter. He completed 65.5 percent of his passes to this point, throwing for 579 yards and two touchdowns without an interception.
