The situation between the New York Giants and now former defensive coordinator Wink Martindale was certainly unprecedented. While we may never know the full details of what happened, it sounds as if Martindale and head coach Brian Daboll weren’t able to get on the same page, which led to some tension between the two.

Despite Daboll approaching Martindale about it several times to squash whatever the issue was, nothing was done. Martindale resigned from his position after outside linebackers coach Drew Wilkins and his brother, Kevin Wilkins, a defensive assistant, were fired.

It was certainly a bizarre situation, as some reports have indicated that Martindale was going rogue and attempting to build something on his own against Daboll. It is a surprise that the first-time head coach was able to hold things together as well as he did, as the Giants finished the season much stronger than they started it.

NFL News & Rumors: Xavier McKinney, Wink Martindale, New York Giants Updates

While it took a little while for Martindale’s resignation to be completed, he is now free to pursue jobs elsewhere. However, the $3 million he was going to be paid for the 2024 season, the Giants will be keeping.

That is yet another job opening on Daboll’s staff, which will have some major turnover. While Martindale is respected around the league, Giants has not found much success with him leading the defense. Also, his departure could clear the way for one key player to remain in New York.

Safety Xavier McKinney is set to hit unrestricted free agency this offseason. He is one of the players who blossomed in 2023 under Martindale, but they did not have a good relationship, evident by some post-game press conferences that were had.

How strained was their relationship? According to Giant Insider, via Fireside Giants on X, formerly Twitter, things were so bad between the two that McKinney was writing off a return to the Giants should Martindale have continued in his role as defensive coordinator.

Having to find a new defensive coordinator certainly isn’t ideal, but from the sounds of it, the change could benefit the Giants long-term. If a player the caliber of McKinney was going to walk without hesitation, that would have not been good.

NFL News & Rumors: Xavier McKinney, Wink Martindale, New York Giants Updates

With Martindale no longer on the Giants’ coaching staff, the team’s chances of retaining McKinney have seemingly increased. That is a good thing because McKinney has developed into a core piece of their defensive game plan.

Whether it is in run support or pass coverage, he gets the job done. This season, the 2020 second-round pick out of Alabama was the No. 4 graded safety in the NFL out of 99 qualified players per PFF.
