The New York Giants have several positions that need to be addressed on their roster this offseason. After going 9-7-1 and making the postseason in the first year under general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll, the wheels fell off in 2023.
New York went 6-11, struggling through the season with an inept offense. Starter Daniel Jones went 1-5, playing at a lower level than backups Tyrod Taylor and undrafted rookie free agent Tommy DeVito.
There has been a lot of discussion about his future with the franchise, as many people believe it is time for the Giants to seek out a new long-term option under center. But, whoever is under center in 2024 and beyond needs to have a better offensive line ahead of them to operate at their highest level.
NFL News & Rumors: Mark Glowinski, 2024 NFL Free Agency, New York Giants Updates
New York’s offensive line was poor last season, ranking at or near the bottom in all categories. They allowed a season-high 85 sacks, some of which was on the offensive line but their quarterbacks also did nothing to help avoid sacks.
Outside of left tackle Andrew Thomas, there aren’t any surefire keepers along the Giants’ offensive line. They are hoping 2022 first-round pick Evan Neal and 2023 second-round pick John Michael Schmitz can improve and live up to their draft pedigrees, but they have been disappointed to this point.
While upgrades are needed virtually everywhere, the interior is where the Giants are the weakest. That could lead to the team moving on from veteran Mark Glowinski, who was named a potential cut candidate by Matt Okada of NFL.com.
“After a strong first season with Big Blue in 2022, Glowinski took a huge step back this past year and ended up starting in just six of 13 games played. Unless the G-Men have faith in a bounce back, this should be an easy $5.7 million in cap savings this offseason,” wrote Okada.
NFL News & Rumors: Mark Glowinski, 2024 NFL Free Agency, New York Giants Updates
Given how poor this unit was in 2023, all options for changes should be on the table. Given how much his role shrunk last season, as Glowinski started in only six games, he is likely on the chopping block this offseason.
Being able to save $5.7 million is a nice incentive for New York, as Glowinski wasn’t as productive as they had hoped. The team is hopeful the firing of Carmen Bricillo away from the Las Vegas Raiders will help get this unit on track. Too many players leave the Giants and improve on the offensive line, which points to issues with coaching and development.
