The New York Giants received a lot of criticism for their selection of Daniel Jones in the 2019 NFL Draft. He managed to impressive throwing 24 touchdown passes as a rookie and showing signs of being the long-term answer at this position.
One of the main areas where Jones needs to focus on improving is in his ability to protect the football. He fumbled the ball a league-most 18 times during his rookie campaign and that is simply going to need to change in order for the Giants’ offense to become more successful.
In a recent interview with Dan Duggan of The Athletic, Jones mentioned the ‘biggest thing is ball security’ for his areas of emphasis this offseason. He’s looking to better protect the ball, in general, but especially when in the pocket.
“I think the biggest thing is ball security, and particularly in the pocket, protecting the ball,” Jones said.
It will only help Jones to better protect the ball considering the Giants have emphasized bolstering its offensive line. After having one of the lesser units in the league last season, drafting talents like Andrew Thomas, Matthew Peart, and Shane Lemiuex in addition to signing Cam Fleming will help.
With personal adjustments to approach and better supporting talent, there is a real combination of factors that should help Jones cut down on fumbles in 2020. That’s critical for a team that had fewer turnovers (33) than only the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (41) and Carolina Panthers (35).
It’s incredibly rare to find a quarterback that doesn’t have a variety of areas to address after coming off their rookie season. Daniel Jones is certainly no exception and it will be fascinating to see how much he can improve heading into his second season in the NFL.
