There hasn’t been much to get excited about when it comes to the New York Giants in the 2023 season. But, in the last few weeks of the season, they have received some solid production from two rookies.
Undrafted free agent quarterback Tommy DeVito has been thrust into the lineup after Daniel Jones and Tyrod Taylor both suffered injuries. Jones is out for the remainder of the season after tearing his ACL and Taylor is dealing with a rib injury, but is eligible to return from injured reserve in Week 14 when the team comes off bye.
Riding a two-game winning streak with DeVito at the helm, there is a chance the Giants let him play out the stretch as the starter. He set a franchise record by throwing five touchdowns in his two starts and has produced at a higher clip than Jones did at any point this season.
Improving every week, DeVito could face competition from Taylor heading into their matchup against the Green Bay Packers. He has certainly done enough to warrant consideration for the starting job moving forward, throwing six touchdowns with one interception in three starts and being 2-1.
One of the players he has found a nice rhythm with in the passing game is fellow rookie, wide receiver Jalin Hyatt. The third-round pick out of Tennessee hasn’t been involved in the offense much to this point but he has seen his role increase with DeVito under center.
Hyatt is heading into the bye week with a ton of momentum. He is coming off his best performance as a professional in Week 12 against the New England Patriots, catching five passes for 109 yards.
As shared by Jordan Ranaan of ESPN, his stock is on the rise. Hyatt became the first Giants’ receiver to reach the 100-yard mark this season. He is someone the coaching staff should look to get more involved as his skill set, elite speed and downfield playmaking, are something the offense has been lacking.
With slim-to-none chances of making the playoffs, developing younger players such as DeVito and Hyatt for the remainder of the season should be the team’s priority. DeVito has earned the chance to lockdown the starter role out of the bye and Hyatt should be involved more regularly with the offense lacking playmakers.
