It took a little while, but the New York Giants offense finally woke up in the second half against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 2. That unit was steamrolled the first six quarters of the season, getting outscored 60-0 by the Dallas Cowboys and Cardinals combined. That slow start was erased by what Big Blue did in the final two quarters.
The Giants are now 1-1 on the season heading into Week 3 after an offensive explosion. They scored 31 points, including the last 24 unanswered to steal a 31-28 victory away from Arizona. It essentially kept their season alive as a 0-2 start is extremely difficult to come back from.
People have been focusing on the Giants’ offense all offseason as they wondered if their success from 2022 could be replicated. Head coach Brian Daboll and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka got the most out of an underwhelming group but had a talent infusion this offseason.
The Giants saw more speed and athleticism, acquiring that in bundles. Tight end Darren Waller was acquired in a trade from the Las Vegas Raiders. Parris Campbell was signed in free agency while a third-round pick was used on speedster Jalin Hyatt.
The skill position groups around Daniel Jones are much improved, but the Giants could still use some more weapons. Vincent Frank of Sportsnaut has suggested that they continue to bolster the wide receiver group, signing former Pro Bowler, Jarvis Landry.
“A slot receiver in the back end of his prime who played in just nine games last season. Typically, these types of NFL free agents wouldn’t be seen as attractive options. That’s until we realize Landry has a track record of success. A five-time Pro Bowler earlier in his career, Landry averaged 950 receiving yards from 2014-21.
Several contending teams will look into signing Landry ahead of the start of training camp. We like the New York Giants as a possibility. Their receivers caught 4-of-14 passes for 24 yards from Daniel Jones in a season opening 40-0 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. This is an obvious need for New York moving forward.”
While the Giants do have a wide receiver need, Landry isn’t the type of player they are seeking. New York is already overloaded with slot receivers, as bringing in Landry would be redundant; they already have a veteran to rely on for such a role in Sterling Shepard.
If the Giants are going to make a move at wide receiver, it needs to be for a bonafide No. 1 option. Someone such as Mike Evans, Tee Higgins or Brandon Aiyuk would be more in the mold of the kind of player they seek.
