The Green Bay Packers expressed interest in Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor over the summer, but trade talks did not go very far due to the Colts’ high asking price.
Unfortunately for Packers fans, it doesn’t appear that Green Bay will revisit trade discussions.
Taylor, who is eligible to return to the field for Indianapolis this Sunday after spending the first four weeks of the season on the PUP list, asked the Colts for a trade during the offseason after the club failed to give him a contract extension.
Green Bay engaged Indianapolis in trade talks, but the Colts were asking for a first-round draft pick—or a package of equal value to a first-rounder—in return for Taylor.
According to Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL media, there has been no recent trade discussions concerning Taylor between Indy and other teams. They also explicitly stated that the Packers are “no longer in the mix,” so Green Bay seems to have terminated its pursuit.
Taylor apparently did not have any intention of playing for the Colts again, but unless he plans to sit out for the remainder of 2023, he may not have much of a choice.
Indianapolis plans to open its 21-day practice window for Jonathan Taylor on Wednesday, and on Monday, head coach Shane Steichen says that the team hopes to have him on the field for its Week 5 meeting with the Tennessee Titans.
This is obviously not what Packers fans want to hear, as their team’s rushing attack ranks 30th in the NFL. Of course, that has something to do with the fact that Aaron Jones has only seen spotty playing time thus far in 2023 due to a hamstring injury, but it also demonstrates that Green Bay does not have much reliable depth in its backfield.
