Packers Urged To Sign Veteran Cornerback After Week 3

The Green Bay Packers clawed their way back from a 17-0 fourth-quarter hole on Sunday, emerging from Lambeau Field with an exciting 18-17 win over the New Orleans Saints.

The Packers have gotten off to a 2-1 start and seem primed to make a run in the very winnable NFC North division, but it is clear that they have some holes that require patching.

Bleacher Report feels that one of the club’s top needs is at cornerback and suggests that the team sign free-agent cornerback Bryce Callahan.

The B/R staff cites the struggles of Packers slot cornerback Keisean Nixon thus far in 2023. In Week 3, Nixon was targeted nine times and gave up eight completions for 62 yards and a touchdown.

While Callahan is not on an NFL roster for a reason, he would likely represent an upgrade over the young Nixon, and with Green Bay surprisingly in contention early on, it would behoove the organization to try and fix its problem in the secondary.

Callahan last played for the Los Angeles Chargers in 2022, appearing in 15 games and making 11 starts. During that time, he logged 47 tackles, three interceptions, six passes defended and a defensive touchdown. It wasn’t his best season overall, but he was at least respectable.

The 31-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Rice University, went undrafted but caught on with the Chicago Bears as a free agent in 2015.

By his second season, he was receiving regular playing time and ended up spending four years with the Bears, carving out a defined role within Chicago’s defensive backfield.

Following his time in the Windy City, Callahan spent two seasons with the Denver Broncos before joining the Chargers.

The Packers won’t get much time to savor their comeback victory, as they will host the Detroit Lions on Thursday night.
