Indianapolis Colts: 3 Reasons Why a Khalil Mack Trade Makes Sense

Jake Roth-USA TODAY Sports

The Colts Lack a Superstar on Defense

One reason why getting Mack to Indy would make sense is because the Colts desperately need a superstar on defense. Currently, they have plenty of guys with potential to be stars, like Malik Hooker and Quincy Wilson. They have some guys who have shown they are good, like Jabaal Sheard, but they lack that guy that opponents are scared of.

In the NFL, one of the most important things needed to be successful is a good pass rush. The Colts simply haven’t been getting to the quarterback in recent seasons and therefore their defense has suffered.

Back in the Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis days, the Colts’ pass rush was able to make up for many of the other holes in the defense because opponents wouldn’t have much time to pass. They would be smart to take a similar approach and try to get a lethal pass rush to counter today’s pass-heavy game of football.

Khalil Mack would instantly bring star power to Indianapolis that the Colts lack. Mack would open up even more opportunities for the Colts interior lineman and defensive end Sheard as he would command plenty of attention from the opposing offensive line. Chris Ballard has stated he wants to build around home-grown players that are drafted by the Colts, but a pass rusher with the talent that Mack has doesn’t become available very often.
