Indianapolis Colts May Have To Cut Fan Favorite Due To Cap

The Indianapolis Colts find themselves in a favorable position this offseason, boasting ample cap space and a promising quarterback prospect to build around.

However, despite these advantages, tough decisions loom, particularly regarding roster cuts. One such casualty could be Mo Alie-Cox, a long-serving member of the Colts.

Arriving in Indianapolis in 2018 as an undrafted free agent from Virginia Commonwealth, Alie-Cox has been a consistent presence. Yet, with consecutive seasons of subpar receiving yardage, doubts have emerged about his future with the team.

Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team recently highlighted Alie-Cox as a potential cap casualty for the Colts.

“Mo Alie-Cox had just 13 catches for 161 yards, the lowest of his career since 2019. Indianapolis Colts coach Shane Steichen appears to have settled on Kylen Granson as his tight end, and the team should also get Jelani Woods back healthy next season.”

Meirov pointed out that the Colts possess alternative options at tight end, such as Kylen Granson and Jelani Woods, lessening the necessity of retaining Alie-Cox. Releasing the veteran would provide significant cap relief, saving the team $5.9 million without incurring any dead money.

This isn’t the first time Alie-Cox has appeared on lists of potential cap casualties. Bleacher Report also identified him as a prime candidate due to his substantial cap hit for Indianapolis in 2024.

While parting ways with Alie-Cox may be a difficult decision given his tenure with the team, it appears prudent to capitalize on the financial flexibility that cutting him would afford.
