The Indianapolis Colts face several options when they’re on the clock in Round 1 of the draft, ranging from bolstering their passing game with another playmaker to addressing pass rush needs or shoring up their secondary.
Renowned analyst and former Miami and Minnesota GM, Rick Spielman, suggests prioritizing the latter by selecting versatile defensive back Cooper DeJean from Iowa.
“So I got an opportunity to get a guy that’s a very good football player that can be physical in run support, that can play nickel, he can play outside, I think he can play safety if he had to. He’s just too good of a football player to pass up. ALSO, I think he’s going to be a legit punt returner.”
Spielman highlights DeJean’s versatility, citing his proficiency at lining up on the boundary, playing safety, and even slot coverage.
Over the past two seasons, DeJean has showcased his prowess in coverage, allowing a mere 47 percent completion rate and conceding 10.4 yards per catch, while tallying seven interceptions and nine pass breakups.
DeJean’s defensive capabilities extend beyond coverage; he’s also a reliable tackler, successfully completing 111 out of 117 attempts. Furthermore, his contributions on special teams, including 31 punt return attempts averaging an impressive 13.1 yards per return, add another dimension to his game.
Standing at 6-1, 207 pounds, DeJean boasts an upcoming workout on April 8th. Despite a shortened 2023 season due to a fibula injury, he remains a compelling prospect.
Considering the Colts’ needs, particularly in the secondary, DeJean emerges as a viable solution. With potential competition at the free safety position between Nick Cross and Rodney Thomas, the strong safety spot remains open for DeJean’s consideration.
Moreover, improvements across the cornerback and safety positions are crucial to curtailing explosive plays, an area where the Colts aim to excel this season.
While other cornerback prospects like Nate Wiggins, Quinyon Mitchell, and Terrion Arnold might be available, the draft landscape suggests that safeties meeting the Colts’ criteria may not be within reach early on. Thus, DeJean stands out as a strategic and versatile choice for the Colts in Round 1.
