J.K. Dobbins could make sense for the Chargers at No. 37 in the NFL Draft

The Los Angeles Chargers were able to re-sign running back Austin Ekeler to a long-term contract this offseason. However, they were unable to keep Melvin Gordon. Gordon ended up signing with the division rival Denver Broncos in free agency.

While Ekeler is more than capable of turning into the full-time starter, the Chargers could look for another back in the 2020 NFL Draft. That running back could end up being Ohio State standout J.K. Dobbins.

CBS Sports projected the Chargers to take Dobbins with the No. 37 overall pick of the NFL Draft. He would be a huge second-round addition for L.A.

The Chargers locked up Austin Ekeler long-term, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to load him up with 300-plus touches. Dobbins can help contribute to what could be one of the league’s best RB tandems.

Ekeler isn’t the kind of back who should be relied on to be an every down workhorse back. Dobbins, however, could form a dynamic one-two punch with him.

Last season with the Buckeyes, Dobbins racked up 301 carries for 2,003 yards and 21 touchdowns. He also caught 23 passes for 247 yards and another two scores. Those numbers show why the Chargers should target him.

Dobbins has legitimate star potential at the NFL level. He has the speed, vision, and work ethic to become something very special. Los Angeles should strongly consider taking him early in the second round if he is available.

The Chargers are going through major changes this offseason. Gone are Philip Rivers and Gordon and a new era is set to start. Dobbins would be a nice weapon who could help keep the offense running at a high level.
