Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence left his team’s overtime loss to the Cincinnati Bengals this past Monday due to an ankle injury, and afterward, the Jaguars were criticized for mishandling the injury.
Lawrence probably should have rode a cart to the locker room, but instead, he walked, and this week, the youngster took responsibility for it.
“We talked about getting a cart, and I was going to get a cart, and then I’m standing there and I’m already on the sideline at that point, the tunnel’s right there, I just wanted to get off the field, get out of there,” Lawrence said, via Michael DiRocco of ESPN. “I didn’t know what was going on with my ankle, and I felt like I could get off [the field]. I was like, ‘Hey, you’re good. Just don’t bring it out. I’m going in.’ And then once I got in there [the hallway], I’m like, ‘This is a pretty long walk.’ They asked again if I wanted a cart. I’m like, ‘No, we’re going to make it the whole way there.’”
Lawrence went 22-for-29 with 258 yards and a couple of touchdowns before exiting. He also punched in a rushing score. Now, his status for Jacksonville’s Week 14 matchup with the Cleveland Browns is in question. Still, Lawrence does not want anyone blaming the Jags for the issue.
“We have everything we need, and I was the one that that didn’t choose to take [a cart] so you guys put that on me,” Lawrence said. “Maybe that was dumb. Maybe I should have taken one, but it’s nothing to do with us not having a cart available. I don’t think that would happen in the National Football League, especially here with the crew that we have.”
On the season overall, Lawrence has thrown for 3,004 yards, 14 touchdowns and seven interceptions while completing 67.9 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 94.4.
The Jaguars are 8-4 on the year and are clinging to a one-game lead over both the Indianapolis Colts and Houston Texans in the AFC South.
Of course, if Trevor Lawrence is unable to play against the Browns, things will become that much more difficult for Jacksonville to maintain its lead, especially with the Colts surging.
