Jets Could Look To Steal Intriguing Cowboys’ Player In Free Agency

The New York Jets have a few clear needs heading into the 2024 NFL offseason. Arguably the No. 1 need for the team is reinforcements along the offensive line, as that was the team’s weakest unit during the 2023 season.

While everyone pointed to the performance of their quarterbacks, which was ugly in its own right, not many people would have found success behind the Jets’ offensive line. They struggled to protect in the passing game or open up holes for the running backs, leading to some middling results.

Upgrading in the trenches is a must this offseason. Unfortunately for the Jets, if they are looking for veterans, their options are limited. You aren’t going to find many foundational pieces available along the offensive line as teams will do everything in their power to retain useful offensive line depth.

NFL NEWS & RUMORS: Tyron Smith, NFL Free Agency, Dallas Cowboys, New York Jets Updates

However, Rich Cimini of ESPN has pinpointed one player the Jets could look to bring in. Dallas Cowboys left tackle Tyron Smith is someone Cimini believes would be a potential target for New York in free agency.

“Tyron Smith of the Dallas Cowboys is 33. He is still an outstanding pass blocker, but he has the age and he has missed a bunch of games in recent years. When he is out there, he’s awesome,” Cimini said during a recent episode of “The Flight Deck Podcast” via 98.7 FM ESPN. (H/T Heavy)

It would be hard to imagine this being a move that gets Jets fans excited. Yes, Smith is one of the best left tackles of this generation and has a chance at entering the Hall of Fame when his career is over.

But, can the Jets really take a risk on an aging, injury-prone player again at left tackle? It worked out poorly with Duane Brown, which contributed to the team’s offensive line falling apart in recent seasons.

NFL NEWS & RUMORS: Tyron Smith, NFL Free Agency, Dallas Cowboys, New York Jets Updates

Smith was once a pillar of good health and availability, missing only one game in his first five seasons in the NFL. However, in the last eight seasons, he has missed at least three games in each campaign. In two of those seasons, he played a total of six games combined.

A stopgap option is certainly on the table given the current landscape of the team. The Jets are all-in as long as Aaron Rodgers is their quarterback. But, even if they sign a veteran such as Smith in free agency, that shouldn’t deter them from targeting a long-term option at tackle early in the 2024 NFL Draft.
