Round 2: Denzel Mims

With the Jets losing Robby Anderson to free agency, and only able to sign Breshad Perriman, the Jets had a weakness at receiver that they needed to address, and they addressed it in the 2nd round with the pick of Denzel Mims.

While in college, Mims played his entire career with the Baylor Bears. While with Baylor, Mims torched teams down the field and always managed to stretch the top end of defenses due to his speed and athleticism, as well as because of Baylor’s offense. Mims was one of the best deep-ball targets in college football last year, but with that deep ball skill, comes a lack of nuance in route running.

Due to Baylor throwing the ball deep down the field often, and with Mims athleticism, Mims did not show any real route running skill as he never had too. Mims did show off some route-running skills during senior day with great explosivity out of his routes, but there is still some uncertainty surrounding Mims route-running skills.

While concerns are surrounding Mims and his route running prowess, there is hope for Mims development. One thing that the Jets likely saw that put hope in their heart with Mims was his elite-level athleticism, and boy did he show that at the combine.

At the combine, Mims finished with a 4.38 40 yard dash, a 6.66 3 cone drill, a 10 foot, 11-inch broad jump, and a 38.5-inch vertical jump. What Mims did at the combine was nothing short of spectacular and it shows that Mims is the athlete everybody thought he was, but it also gave hope to some teams that his great athleticism and explosiveness can translate into other aspects in his game.

The Jets have a very poor wide receiver group so Mims will likely get a good amount of playing time, but with Mims still being on the raw side when it comes to route running, Mims likely won’t make a massive impact in his first season in the NFL, but later on in his career, Mims has potential to be a number one receiver in the NFL.
