Jets Projected To Receive Additional Help In NFL Draft

The only good thing to come out of the struggles of the 2023 regular season for the New York Jets is that they will be keeping their first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Part of the stipulation in acquiring Aaron Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers was that the Jets would send a first or second-round pick back to them depending on how many snaps he played during the season.

With Rodgers getting hurt on the fourth snap of the season and not getting back on the court, the Jets are sending a second-rounder to Green Bay. While they could certainly use all the draft capital they could get, sending that pick instead of their first-rounder, which is No. 10 overall, is certainly better.

Right now, the Jets don’t have a ton of draft capital to round out their roster with. They currently own only five selections, as they are without second, fifth and seventh-round picks. New York does own a second fourth-round pick from the Denver Broncos and will be on the clock at Nos. 10, 72, 111, 113 and 186.

However, the Jets are expected to add multiple seventh-round picks via the NFL’s compensatory process. No one knows the exact formula for how compensatory picks are shared, but it is based on the value of free agents lost compared to free agents signed.

New York wasn’t overly active in free agency last offseason, as their biggest move was a trade. Their signing of Allen Lazard, however, is projected to give the Packers an extra fifth-round pick. As a result, they are in line to have three seventh-round picks added to their draft stock at Nos. 252, 253 and 256.

The Jets are in line for these selections because of free agents who left the team last season. Offensive linemen Nate Herbig and Dan Feeney signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Miami Dolphins, respectively. Also joining Feeney down in South Beach was quarterback Mike White.
