Joey Bosa May Have Played His Final Game With Chargers

Could Joey Bosa’s days with the Los Angeles Chargers be coming to a swift end?

The Chargers have one of the worst salary cap situations in the NFL, meaning that the front office will have to make some tough decisions in the coming weeks.

Los Angeles is currently $33.7 million over the cap (per Spotrac), so it will almost surely be cutting some players as free agency approaches.

Bosa could be one of those players, and Spotrac’s Michael Ginnitti sees the defensive lineman as someone who is firmly on the bubble in terms of his safety on LA’s roster.

As terrific as Bosa is as a pass rusher, the fact of the matter is that he has hardly been available for the Chargers over the last couple of seasons.

Since 2022, Bosa has played in a grand total of 14 games, most recently appearing in nine contests this past year. During his time on the field in 2023, Bosa logged 20 tackles, 6.5 sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery, so clearly, he is still very productive, but his lack of durability makes his contract a tough sell.

The 28-year-old has two years and $47 million remaining on his deal, and if Los Angeles releases him before March 15, it would save $14 million.

Bosa, who played his collegiate football at Ohio State, was selected by the Bolts with the third overall pick of the 2016 NFL Draft.

He hit the ground running during his rookie campaign, registering 41 tackles and 10.5 sacks en route to winning Defensive Rookie of the Year.

The following season, Bosa racked up 70 tackles, 12.5 sacks and four forced fumbles, earning his first of four Pro Bowl selections.

Overall, Joey Bosa has posted four double-digit sack seasons, so there is no doubting his ability.

Whether or not he can stay on the field is another question entirely.

The Chargers went 5-12 this past year.
