The San Francisco 49ers may have a difficult time keeping wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk after next season due to financial constraints, and Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox thinks the Kansas City Chiefs may be lurking in the weeds as a potential destination for him.

Aiyuk is entering the final year of his deal and has established himself as a legitimate No. 1 wide out, but because the 49ers have so many other financial obligations, he may end up pricing himself out of their range. Even he seems to understand this, and it is creating a rather intriguing situation between the star pass-catcher and San Francisco heading into 2024.

Could the Chiefs—who just beat the Niners in the Super Bowl—step in and try to make something happen?

Knox suggests that Kansas City could offer its first-round draft pick and a second-rounder to the 49ers in exchange for Aiyuk, which would certainly be a solid haul for San Francisco.

But here is the thing: would the Chiefs pay Aiyuk?

Let’s remember that Kansas City traded Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins two years ago because it did not want to give him a lucrative long-term deal, so, as Knox points out, the Chiefs may feel the same way about Aiyuk, who is not quite on Hill’s level as a receiver.

Plus, Kansas City just won a championship without having an actual No. 1 receiver on the roster, so perhaps the front office feels it can still seriously contend even without a top-flight guy at that position.

Either way, it’s certainly an interesting proposition. Imagine Aiyuk catching passes from Patrick Mahomes?

The 25-year-old is coming off of a spectacular 2023 campaign in which he played 16 games and hauled in 75 receptions for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns.

It marks the second straight year that Aiyuk has eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark, as he registered 1,015 receiving yards in 2022.

Chances are, Brandon Aiyuk will begin 2024 with the 49ers, but you never know what happens in today’s NFL, where trades have become much more commonplace.
