Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes Doesn’t Hold Back On Chasing Tom Brady

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes won his third Super Bowl championship on Sunday night, but he still has a long way to go to catch Tom Brady, who collected seven rings during his illustrious NFL career.

Mahomes was asked about the prospect of chasing Brady on Monday.

“Yeah, I think it’s more just me trying to be the best I can be,” Mahomes said, via Andrew Siciliano of NFL media. “I don’t want to have any regrets at the end of my career. And I know how great of an organization, how great of a coach, tight end, players that I have around me. And I don’t want to let that slide by. I want to make sure I maximize my opportunities.”

Mahomes is just 28 years old, so he has plenty of time to catch—or pass—Brady. After all, Brady won two of his Super Bowls in his 40s.

“Obviously, the goal is always seven [rings] — it’s always to try and get as much as you can,” added Mahomes. “And so, all I can do is try to maximize my opportunities every single day, continue to work to be better not only for myself, but for my team. And we’ll see what happens at the end of my career.”

Of course, there is a reason why no other quarterback in NFL history has won more than four championships.

I know it may sound elementary, but many people still don’t seem to understand that it is hard to win Super Bowls. Things like injuries, off years and roster changes happen, so you can’t just pencil in Mahomes for seven rings just because he already has three.

Think about it: he isn’t even halfway there yet.

Let’s remember that Brady went eight seasons without winning a ring between 2005 and 2013, and during that span, he only reached the Super Bowl twice. A similar type of dry spell could very well come for Mahomes.

The Chiefs were hardly dominant this year, either. They were 9-6 at one point, and there were some who felt that the Baltimore Ravens were a shoo-in to win the AFC.

If anyone can equal or surpass Tom Brady, it’s Patrick Mahomes. But we should probably pump the brakes for now. There is still a large gulf of four championships between the two quarterbacks.
