The New York Jets made some major changes to their roster this offseason. They are hoping to now be contenders in the AFC after landing Aaron Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers. When taking a look at the roster, it is easy to see why expectations are so high.
The defense, which was fourth in points allowed and yardage in 2022, should remain one of the top units in the NFL. Offensively, the Jets have revamped their skill positions, adding wide receivers Allen Lazard, Randall Cobb and Mecole Hardman to the mix. The Jets were also winners of the Dalvin Cook sweepstakes, landing the Pro Bowl running back in free agency.
While everything looks great on paper, there is one weakness that could derail the offense; the offensive line. New York’s unit in the trenches is a bit shaky and it wouldn’t hurt to add some reinforcements ahead of the regular season.
A popular option has been Packers’ left tackle David Bakhtiari, but their general manager, Brian Gutekunst, shut down any trade rumors. But, should the Jets want to add another veteran to the mix, one has already offered up his services.
Jason Peters, who spent the 2022 season with the Dallas Cowboys as a rotational player, was asked about joining New York. According to Kyle Brandt of Good Morning Football, it is something that Peters would certainly be open to should the call come.
“They give me the call, I’m gonna show up and show out. That’s what I do. I’m a straight professional when it comes to that. Helping the young guys- if they want me to sit, you know I’ll sit,” Peters said when asked about joining the Jets.
Peters, who went undrafted out of Arkansas, turned himself into one of the best tackles in the NFL. He earned a spot on the Hall of Fame 2010s team, as his resume includes nine Pro Bowls, two First-Team All-Pro nods and four Second-Team All-Pro accolades.
One of the best left tackles of his generation, Peters was truly dominant while blocking on the blide side for the Buffalo Bills and Philadelphia Eagles. He isn’t the same player now at 41 years old, but he is certainly still serviceable. As a depth insurance piece, the Jets should certainly consider taking him up on his offer.
