The Los Angeles Chargers have consistently fallen short of expectations in recent years, despite boasting one of the NFL’s top quarterbacks.

Despite their talent, the Chargers have failed to surpass their preseason win projections since 2018, when they clinched a playoff victory under the leadership of Phillip Rivers. Over the past five seasons, they have consistently fallen short of their preseason win totals by an average of 2.5 games, culminating in a dismal 5-12 record last season which ultimately cost head coach Brandon Staley his job.

Now, with new head coach Jim Harbaugh at the helm, optimism abounds in Los Angeles. Harbaugh, fresh off leading Michigan to a national title, has a proven track record of success in the NFL.

Oddsmakers are anticipating a swift turnaround for the Chargers under his guidance. With a preseason win total of 8.5 games set by FanDuel Sportsbook, a significant improvement from last season’s disappointing campaign, hopes are high for a resurgence.

Despite losing veteran wide receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams in free agency, the Chargers retain a key piece for success in quarterback Justin Herbert, who secured a lucrative contract extension before the previous season. Harbaugh’s winning pedigree further fuels the preseason hype.

During his tenure with the San Francisco 49ers, Harbaugh amassed an impressive 44-19-1 record over four seasons, leading the team to three NFC Championship games and a Super Bowl appearance.

The AFC West, once touted as one of football’s premier divisions, now presents an opportunity for the Chargers to rise. While the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, remain formidable, both the Denver Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders are in rebuilding phases with low expectations for the upcoming season.

Additionally, with four games scheduled against the Broncos (5.5 win total) and Raiders (6.5 win total), the Chargers have a chance to bolster their win total.

However, dethroning the Chiefs for the division title remains a daunting task. Kansas City, having secured the AFC West crown for eight consecutive seasons, is heavily favored at -220 to extend their streak.

Nevertheless, the Chargers are poised as the runner-up for the AFC West title at +350, their best position since 2009, signaling a renewed sense of competitiveness within the franchise.
