The Los Angeles Chargers lost wide receiver Mike Williams to a torn ACL in their Week 3 win over the Minnesota Vikings, knocking him out for the remainder of the season.
Obviously, the Chargers may need to look for a replacement, and Liam Hanley of ClutchPoints feels that Cincinnati Bengals wideout Tyler Boyd would be a good fit.
It makes some sense.
Boyd is one of two Bengals receivers in the final year of their respective contracts, with Tee Higgins being the other. It seems doubtful that Cincinnati will be able to retain both in free agency, so there is a chance it could move one of them ahead of the Oct. 31 NFL trade deadline.
Los Angeles could offer a 2024 third-round draft pick to Cincy in exchange for Boyd, which would allow the Chargers to replace Williams with a reliable receiver and would provide the Bengals with some solid draft compensation.
Now it should be noted that Cincinnati saved its season with a win over the Los Angeles Rams on Monday night, so it probably won’t be in a rush to trade any pieces at the moment.
However, the Bengals didn’t exactly look great in the victory, as their laboring offense mustered just 19 points. Cincinnati ranks 30th in the NFL in offense and has amassed a grand total of 46 points through the first three weeks of 2023. So, the Bengals’ win over the Rams doesn’t exactly mean they are back; it just means they avoided falling into the 0-3 abyss.
If Cincinnati’s struggles continue, it would not be surprising to see the club ship off one of Boyd or Higgins in the coming weeks.
Boyd has been a luxury piece as Cincy’s No. 3 receiver behind Ja’Marr Chase and Higgins. He has logged 13 catches for 101 yards thus far this season.
Should the Bengals opt to place Boyd on the trade block, the Chargers should be near the head of the line.
