Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford suffered a thumb injury during his team’s blowout loss to the Dallas Cowboys this past Sunday, leaving the Rams with some questions under center heading into Week 9.
Could the Rams sign a signal-caller to shore up the position in the wake of Stafford’s injury?
On Tuesday, NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that Los Angeles was looking to add another quarterback with familiarity, which has many speculating who it could be. Rapoport added that it will not be John Wolford, who served as a backup for the Rams from 2020 through 2022 and actually made two starts last season.
Some fans are wondering if it could be Bryce Perkins, who signed with the Rams as an undrafted free agent back in 2020 and made a start for Los Angeles with Stafford sidelined in 2022.
During that start, Perkins went 13-for-23 with 100 yards, a touchdown and a couple of interceptions while carrying the ball nine times for 44 yards.
Perkins is certainly a talented player and is a dual threat, so he is definitely exciting to watch. And, of course, he definitely checks the “with familiarity” box that Rapoport mentioned.
The 26-year-old played his collegiate football at the University of Virginia and put forth a couple of solid seasons with the Cavaliers. In his first year with the school, he threw for 2,680 yards, 25 touchdowns and nine interceptions while completing 64.5 percent of his passes. He also rushed for 923 yards and nine scores. The following season, Perkins totaled 3,538 yards, 22 touchdowns and 12 picks through the air while adding 769 yards and 11 scores on the ground.
Los Angeles is just 3-5 on the year and is seeing its playoff hopes fade rather quickly in the competitive NFC West. We will see who is under center for the Rams when they take on the Green Bay Packers this Sunday.
