Vikings Again Connected To Russell Wilson In NFL Offseason

Russell Wilson, Denver Broncos, Minnesota Vikings

Could Russell Wilson be the answer for the Minnesota Vikings at quarterback? Bleacher Report’s Ryan Fowler thinks so.

The Vikings are heading into the offseason with a big question under center. Kirk Cousins has been taking snaps for the club for the last six years, but he is set to be a free agent this March and is coming off of a torn Achilles.

For that reason, Minnesota could very well go in a different direction at signal-caller, and with the Denver Broncos seeming likely to release Wilson, the Vikings could very well explore the Wilson avenue.

The Broncos benched Wilson with two games remaining in the regular season after the veteran declined to defer his $37 million injury guarantee. That all but spelled the end of Wilson’s short tenure in Denver.

It’s not that Wilson played poor football in 2023. Quite the contrary, as a matter of fact.

In 15 starts this past season, Wilson threw for 3,070 yards, 26 touchdowns and eight interceptions while completing 66.4 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 98. It was certainly a massive step up from his debut campaign in the Mile High City, where he tossed 16 touchdowns and 11 picks in what was, by far, the worst year of his NFL career.

But in spite of Wilson’s improvement this season, it seems pretty clear that he and first-year head coach Sean Payton do not see eye to eye. Payton obviously wants Wilson out, meaning that the 34-year-old will be playing his football elsewhere in 2024.

Wilson would likely fit well in Minnesota. The Vikings already have Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison in their receiving corps, so Wilson would have terrific weaponry at his disposal.

Minnesota also has a solid defense, meaning that the Vikings could be a legitimate contender with Wilson, so long as the nine-time Pro Bowler does not revert to his 2022 form.

If and when the Broncos cut ties with Russell Wilson, he will immediately become one of the top available players on the free-agent market, and Minnesota could very well be interested.
