The current situation about running backs around the NFL has found its way to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Their starting running back, Najee Harris, has not been shy about voicing his opinion about the current state of affairs.

The 2021 first-round pick out of Alabama has been one of the more vocal players when it comes to the start of the running back situation and their contracts. Unsurprisingly, it was something that he was asked about once he arrived for Steelers training camp.

On Wednesday, Harris answered questions without hesitation. The only difference was this time, he prefaced it by praising the Steelers organization and the front office, coaching staff and anyone else he has come in contact with. He, personally, hasn’t had any issues but with how outspoken he has been, some could arise down the line.

Entering Year 3 of his NFL career, it won’t be long until Harris is seeking a contract extension of his own. He will be eligible for an extension next offseason for the first time, but given how things currently are around the league, it would be shocking if the Steelers offered him one.

Pittsburgh can retain Harris’ rights for two more seasons beyond 2023 as long as they exercise the fifth-year option on his rookie contract. After that, the Steelers would have the option to place the franchise tag on him, which Tony Pollard, Saquon Barkley and Josh Jacobs all received this offseason. None of them signed long-term deals with their respective teams.

While Harris has done the right things by speaking positively about the Steelers, he is certainly walking a fine line with his comments. Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay spoke out about the current situation and he assuredly isn’t the only owner that shares those sentiments.

Through two seasons, Harris has handled a heavy workload with the Steelers, totaling 694 touches for 2,930 yards of total offense and 20 touchdowns. This is something that has become an issue around the league as teams have no issues running a player at the position into the ground as they feel it is the most easily replaced position on the roster.

That could be something Harris is heading toward if his workload continues the way it has his first two seasons in the league. However, the Steelers are in the business of winning football games and if that means riding Harris, that is what they are going to do.
