Patriots Coach Makes Bold Statement On Mac Jones

These last couple of weeks may very well have been the roughest two weeks of New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones‘ NFL tenure.

In Week 3, the Patriots quarterback came under fire after New York Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner accused Jones of hitting him in the private area, which marks the latest questionable incident in what has become a career full of them for Jones. The Patriots won the game, but it was an ugly 15-10 victory.

Then, this past week, New England suffered its worst loss of the Bill Belichick era, as the Pats were routed by the Dallas Cowboys 38-3. Jones was benched in the second half of the defeat after going 12-for-21 with 150 yards, two interceptions and a lost fumble.

In turn, trade speculation has been swirling around Jones, whom the Patriots actually shopped during the offseason.

However, Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien does not seem all that bothered by Jones’ dreadful performance against the Cowboys.

“You can’t let things get out of hand, and that’s what happened, because we didn’t do a good enough job of stemming the tide and fixing things right away and going back to our fundamentals,” O’Brien said, via NBC Sports Boston. “… You always have to play mentally within yourself. It doesn’t mean that you can’t take calculated risks; it just means that you have to do a really good job of making sure that you understand what we’re trying to do on every play and executing that play to the best of your ability at a high level, and take what the defense gives you. I would say, for the most part, Mac does that. We’re going to work really hard this week to improve some things.”

On the season overall, Jones has thrown for 898 yards, five touchdowns and four picks while completing 63.7 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 80.8.

Now in his third season, the 25-year-old has shown little to no progression, and a legitimate argument can be made that Mac Jones has actually regressed since his rookie year.

The Patriots will look to get back on track when they take on the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.
