The New England Patriots may be souring on quarterback Mac Jones, and for good reason. Jones was benched in each of the last two weeks after putting forth miserable performances in back-to-back losses, and now, many are wondering if the Patriots will move on from Jones this offseason.
The question is, who would replace Jones in New England?
Of course, the Pats’ top option right now is second-year signal-caller Bailey Zappe, who relieved Jones in both of his two recent benchings. However, whether or not the Patriots view him as a legitimate option for the future is debatable.
Could New England ultimately turn to a veteran quarterback in free agency? How about Ryan Tannehill?
Jason Schandl of FanSided poses the possibility, and it’s something that we really can’t rule out.
Obviously, Tannehill would not represent a long-term solution for the Pats, but he could serve as a stopgap until the Patriots find another young quarterback. Mac Jones may not even last through the end of this season.
The 35-year-old is playing out the final year of his deal with the Tennessee Titans and has struggled mightily through the first six games of 2023, throwing two touchdowns and six interceptions.
It stands to reason that Tannehill may very well be finished, as his last truly effective season came back in 2020 when he threw 33 touchdowns and seven picks.
However, perhaps a change of scenery would do him some good?
The Pats seem awfully far away from contending, so bringing in Tannehill for one season to keep the seat warm and to potentially mentor a young quarterback isn’t such a bad idea.
Tannehill spent the first seven years of his career with the Miami Dolphins before joining the Titans in 2019. During his first season in Tennessee, Ryan Tannehill made a Pro Bowl appearance and was named Comeback Player of the Year.
The Patriots are just 1-5 thus far this season. It’s their worst start since Bill Belichick’s first season as head coach back in 2000.
