New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones may not have been quite as bad in Week 6 as he was in the two preceding games, but he still wasn’t great.
Jones went 24-for-33 with 200 yards and an interception in the Patriots’ 21-17 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, and afterward, the young signal-caller defended his job security in the midst of many calling for him to be benched for good.
“I’m confident. I think that comes from years of experience and earning respect from people, and I think I’ve done that,” Jones said, via Zack Cox of NESN. “But I’m trying to win every game I play in, and I’m not doing it. So I just really want to focus on, ‘How can I bring these guys with me? How can we clean up the little things?’”
Jones added that he wasn’t exactly sure what has gone wrong.
“It takes all 11, and that’s important. And to be the leader of that 11 is a lot of stress, but that’s why I play this game,” he said. “I really want to win, and I’m doing a lot of things to do that during the week. But for whatever reason, it’s just not happening on Sunday.”
Well, the fact that it’s not happening on gameday is exactly why many want Bill Belichick to move on from Mac Jones, who was benched in the second half of both Weeks 4 and 5 due to miserable performances.
The 25-year-old was expected to be on a short leash this past weekend, but apparently, Jones never looked bad enough during the loss to the Raiders for Belichick to turn to Bailey Zappe.
On the season overall, Jones has thrown for 1,208 yards, five touchdowns and seven interceptions while completing 64.2 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 74.4.
The Pats are now just 1-5 and will host the Buffalo Bills next weekend.
