Could the New England Patriots seriously part ways with head coach Bill Belichick in the middle of the season? It sounds unimaginable, but apparently, it is not out of the realm of possibility.
According to Ben Volin of The Boston Globe, Belichick’s future in New England could be riding on the Patriots’ matchup with the Indianapolis Colts in Germany this Sunday.
Volin states that if the Patriots lose to the Colts this weekend and come back to the United States with a 2-8 record, there is a chance that owner Robert Kraft could fire Belichick in the bye week and install linebackers coach Jerod Mayo as the interim head coach for the time being.
He says that it is not 100 percent that Belichick finishes out the season at the helm for the Pats.
This is a fairly surprising report regardless of the circumstances. While the Patriots have certainly been bad this season and have been struggling for several years now, it’s still hard to fathom Kraft seriously canning Belichick, especially during the middle of the season.
Belichick is now in his 24th year as Patriots coach and has won six Super Bowl titles and nine Super Bowl appearances. Additionally, he has guided New England to 17 AFC East division crowns, including 11 straight between 2009 and 2019.
However, Belichick is off to his worst since his first year as Pats head coach back in 2000, when he also started 2-7. The Patriots ended up going 5-11 that year.
Bill Belichick was asked about his job security on Monday, but he said he is merely focused on preparing for the Colts and nothing else.
Since Tom Brady departed via free agency in March 2020, New England has gone just 27-32 with one postseason appearance and no playoff wins.
