This NFL offseason has been full of blockbuster trades. While many people were expecting it at the quarterback position, what unfolded for wide receivers this offseason was not something many people had seen coming. Arguably the most shocking move of the offseason occurred when the Kansas City Chiefs traded star wide receiver, Tyreek Hill, to the Miami Dolphins.
Hill signed a deal to make him the highest-paid wide receiver in the NFL, while the Chiefs received five draft picks in exchange for him.
As long as the Chiefs have Patrick Mahomes under center, they will have a chance to compete. Kansas City was able to sign some solid players at the position in free agency in JuJu Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling. But, it will certainly be difficult to replace the production that Hill provided the team.
Despite moving on from Hill, there have been some reports that the Chiefs are looking to bring in a big-name replacement for him. Could that replacement possibly be D.K. Metcalf of the Seattle Seahawks?
After the Seahawks traded Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos, speculation began picking up about what the team would do with some of their other veterans. Bobby Wagner was a cap casualty, so there is a chance that they enter a rebuilding stage.
If Metcalf is made available, the Chiefs could pounce with some of the draft capital that they acquired from the Dolphins. However, according to Bookies.com, Kansas City doesn’t have the best odds of landing the budding star.
The Chiefs’ odds of having Metcalf on their roster come Week 1 are +750, which puts them fourth behind the odds on favorite Seahawks, Green Bay Packers and New York Jets. Seattle is at -120, while the Packers are +500 and the Jets are +550.
Adding Metcalf as Mahomes go-to receiver would make for some great highlights, but the team could run into a similar issue they just did with Hill. Metcalf is set to become a free agent after the season and will be looking for a contract that pays him as one of the top receivers in the game.
If the Chiefs were unable to accommodate Hill’s asking price, they could run into problems attempting to do it for Metcalf. However, Metcalf is four years younger than Hill, so the Chiefs may be more willing to give him a lucrative long-term contract than they were for Hill.
