New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers is on pace to make a return to Green Bay in 2024, but not in the way you may think.

After the Jets and Packers both lost in Week 15, both teams now sit in third place in their respective divisions. Here is the thing: whoever finishes in third place in the AFC East will battle the Packers in Green Bay next season (h/t Matt Schneidman of The Athletic). So, as of right now, Rodgers is on track to step back on Lambeau Field next year.

Of course, Rodgers spent the first 18 years of his NFL career with the Packers. He backed up Brett Favre for his first three years before becoming the club’s full-time starter in 2008.

It didn’t take long for the University of California product to establish himself as one of the league’s best quarterbacks, as he made the Pro Bowl as soon as 2009. He went on to make 10 trips to the Pro Bowl while also earning four First-Team All-Pro selections in Green Bay overall. On top of that, he won four MVP awards and, most importantly, led the Packers to a Super Bowl championship.

Rodgers also led the NFL in passing touchdowns twice in Green Bay, most recently doing so in 2020 when he hit a career high with 48 touchdown tosses. He also passed the league in completion percentage (70.7 percent) and passer rating (121.5) that season.

The Packers proceeded to trade him to the Jets back in the spring, as both sides decided that it was time to part ways.

New York was expected to contend for a Super Bowl with Rodgers under center, but he ultimately tore his Achilles on the Jets’ first offensive series of the season and has been sidelined ever since.

Aaron Rodgers has been medically cleared to play in Week 16, but it remains to be seen whether or not the future Hall-of-Famer actually takes the field.

New York is 5-9 this year. It will face the Washington Commanders next weekend.
