NFL Analyst Reveals Best Plan For Patriots’ Drake Maye

The New England Patriots selected University of North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye with the third overall pick in the NFL Draft last Thursday, filling a massive void under center.

But will Maye take the reins at signal-caller right from the jump?

Fox Sports analyst Nick Wright doesn’t think he should.

During a recent episode of FS1’s First Things First, Wright suggested that the Patriots sit Maye behind Jacoby Brissett in his rookie campaign.

“I think sitting him is the absolute right decision,” Wright said. “I think Jacoby is a more than competent bridge starter. You need to build up that offensive line. You don’t want him to get David Carr’d when you get sacked 70 time and you’re scarred. … If I were a Pats fan, I would want them to sit him and maybe have another top-five pick to buttress the team next year.”

Wright cites Maye’s youth as another reason why sitting him in his first season may be a wise decision, as Maye is just 21 years old and has ample room to grow.

Maye is coming off of a 2023 campaign in which he threw for 3,608 yards, 24 touchdowns and nine interceptions while completing 63.3 percent of his passes. He also rushed for 449 yards and nine scores.

It was actually a relatively disappointing season for Maye, particularly after he totaled 4,321 yards, 38 touchdowns and seven picks while completing 66.2 percent of his throws and registering 698 yards and seven scores on the ground in 2022.

Some have also expressed some concern over Maye’s mechanics and have wondered if he would be better served learning and absorbing rather than playing in his rookie year.

We’ll see what the Patriots decide to do with Drake Maye, but they definitely have a capable veteran in Brissett if need be.
