Jets Coach Makes Bold Statement On Zach Wilson’s Future

New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson has had a strange 2023 campaign, to say the least.

Wilson entered the season expecting to be Aaron Rodgers’ backup, but Rodgers suffered a torn Achilles on the Jets’ first offensive series of the year, pressing Wilson back into starting duty.

The 24-year-old ended up leading New York to a Week 1 upset win over the Buffalo Bills but then ended up losing three straight starts. He responded by leading the Jets to three straight wins, only to follow that up with four straight losses before being benched in favor of Tim Boyle. After Boyle was clearly not up to the challenge in Week 13, Gang Green re-inserted Wilson as the starter this past Sunday, and he ended up having arguably the best game of his NFL career in a shocking 30-6 win over the Houston Texans.

Now, head coach Robert Saleh doesn’t seem to know what will happen with Wilson in terms of his future with the Jets.

“Anything can happen, especially in this sport,” Saleh said, via the Jets’ official YouTube account. “It’s like a New York minute, right? It swings from one pendulum to the next. He just needs to focus on week-to-week, just putting his best foot forward, and being the best version of him that he can be.”

A report surfaced before Week 14 that New York had told Wilson he would be traded this offseason, but following Wilson’s brilliant performance against the Texans, that might be on hold.

“My conversations with him are to do everything he can to get him ready to play a football game,” Saleh said of the recent trade chatter surrounding Wilson. “As far as all that other stuff is concerned, those are things I’ll leave for Joe [Douglas].”

Wilson went 27-for-36 with 307 yards and a couple of touchdowns in the win over Houston.

Of course, it is going to take more than one outing for Wilson to convince the Jets that he can be their quarterback of the future, as that lone game does not erase what has been three seasons of largely subpar football from the BYU product.

Since entering the NFL as the No. 2 overall pick in 2021, Zach Wilson has gone 12-20 as a starter and has totaled 23 touchdowns and 25 interceptions.

The Jets are 5-8 and will take on the Miami Dolphins next Sunday.
