The New York Jets are in need of another weapon in their aerial attack, and Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Hunter Renfrow could be the solution.
Brad Spielberger of Pro Football Focus names the Jets as a team who could potentially swing a deal for Renfrow between now and the Oct. 31 NFL trade deadline, suggesting that New York send edge rusher Carl Lawson to the Raiders in exchange for the wide out.
Renfrow has been a forgotten man in Las Vegas’ offense this season, as he has logged just eight catches on 12 targets through seven games. There have been two games this year where Renfrow wasn’t targeted at all, with the most recent example coming in Week 6.
However, there was a time when Renfrow was one of the most prolific receivers in football.
Back in 2021, the 27-year-old hauled in 103 receptions for 1,038 yards and nine touchdowns, earning himself a trip to the Pro Bowl.
Injuries then limited Renfrow to just 10 games last year, and during that time, he caught 36 passes for 330 yards and a couple of scores as his role shrunk significantly.
Still, it seems hard to imagine that the Clemson product is suddenly that far removed from his Pro Bowl season just two years ago.
The Jets could certainly use another receiver, as two of their three offseason additions at wide out have not worked out. While Allen Lazard has been fine in a No. 2 role behind Garrett Wilson. Randall Cobb has been a non-factor, and New York just traded Mecole Hardman after the speedster logged only one catch in six games with the club.
Even if Hunter Renfrow doesn’t come close to replicating his 2021 production, he should still represent a rather significant upgrade over what the Jets already have in their receiving corps behind Wilson and Lazard.
Lawson has only played in four games this season and has logged three tackles. An offseason back injury has thrown a wrench into his 2023 campaign, and he has been unable to hit the stride that saw him register seven sacks with the Jets a year ago.
