The Chicago Bears seem likely to trade quarterback Justin Fields this offseason, and the New York Jets are surprisingly among the favorites to land him.
According to the odds from Bookies.com, the Jets have the fifth-best odds to land Fields at +1200.
While many are shocked at New York’s inclusion on the list, it does some make sense when you really think about it.
Obviously, the Jets have Aaron Rodgers under center for 2024, but Rodgers is 40 years old and probably won’t be around much longer.
New York could have Fields learn under Rodgers for a year or two and then turn him loose.
Of course, the idea of Fields actually being okay with that type of setup at this point of his career is another question entirely.
Fields is coming off of a 2023 campaign in which he played 13 games and threw for 2,562 yards, 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions while completing 61.4 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 86.3. He also rushed for 657 yards and four scores.
While those numbers don’t look great on the surface, they represent the best stretch of his career, as Fields showed some brilliant flashes this past season, particularly before going down with a dislocated thumb.
Because of the promise Fields displayed, it seems hard to imagine that he would accept a backup role, even if it isn’t entirely within his control.
The 25-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Ohio State, was selected by the Bears with the 11th overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft.
He has gone just 10-28 as a starter, but that also speaks to how poor Chicago has been as a team.
Perhaps the Jets are legitimately interested in Justin Fields as their quarterback of the future, or maybe the odds are just a load of bologna. We’ll see.
