Zach Wilson may have had a breakout performance in the New York Jets’ Week 4 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, but the Jets would surely still like to bring in a veteran quarterback. How about Las Vegas Raiders signal-caller Jimmy Garoppolo?
Garoppolo signed a three-year, $72.5 million contract with the Raiders back in March after Las Vegas cut ties with long-time quarterback Derek Carr.
Unfortunately for the Raiders, Garoppolo has not worked out like they had hoped. At least not so far.
Garoppolo, who missed the club’s Week 4 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers due to a concussion, has thrown five touchdowns and an NFL-worst six interceptions through three starts. With all of the buzz surrounding rookie quarterback Aidan O’Connell, some have wondered if the Raiders could potentially move Garoppolo ahead of the Oct. 31 NFL trade deadline.
Perhaps the Jets would be interested?
While Garoppolo is certainly not elite, he was able to put together a few nice seasons for the San Francisco 49ers, including the 2019-20 campaign when he led the 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance.
New York could trade a 2024 third-round draft pick and a fourth-rounder to Las Vegas for Jimmy Garoppolo, which would provide the Raiders with some decent draft capital and also allow them to get out from under Garoppolo’s contract. Meanwhile, the Jets would land someone who would certainly represent an upgrade over Wilson.
New York acquired Aaron Rodgers during the offseason and was pegged as a Super Bowl contender as a result, but Rodgers ultimately tore his Achilles on the first offensive series of Week 1, pressing the struggling Wilson into action.
Wilson did look good against the Chiefs, but prior to that, he had assembled a miserable two-year sample size, so the Jets are probably not buying into Wilson just yet.
Gang Green is just 1-3 through the first four weeks, so time is running out for the Jets to salvage their season.
