NFL Analyst Has Rough Thoughts On Colts’ Second-Round Pick

The Indianapolis Colts were one of the big winners on Day 1 of the 2023 NFL Draft. They didn’t make a rash decision to trade up despite rumors swirling that three quarterbacks could come off the board in the first three picks. They stayed pat at No. 4 and were rewarded for it, landing their guy in quarterback Anthony Richardson.

To start Day 2, the Colts opted to make a trade down the board with the Las Vegas Raiders, who came up to No. 35. They traded down a second time with the Atlanta Falcons from No. 38 down to No. 44.

With the No. 44 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Indianapolis selected Kansas State cornerback, Julius Brents. After trading Stephon Gilmore earlier this offseason to the Dallas Cowboys, cornerback was a major need for the Colts.

Brents possesses elite size and length, standing 6’3” and weighing 198 pounds. There is a chance that he will be a Day 1 starter with Dallis Flowers and Isaiah Rodgers currently atop the team’s depth chart.

While Julius Brents seems to be an excellent pick by Indianapolis, not everyone was enamored with the selection. One person who wasn’t high on the move was Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports. Trapasso had some harsh words when evaluating the No. 44 pick.

“Tall, crazy long, elite tester. Twitch for days. Major upside. Can mirror well but lapses following WRs and his ball skills pop on film. Exact type the Colts love. Love the athleticism but comes with some risk.”

Trapasso gave the selection a C+ grade, which is one of the lowest of the night thus far. Only six picks made in Round 2 received a lower grade than what the Colts received from the CBS Sports analyst.

While Trapasso didn’t like the move, the process that was used was excellent. The Colts picked up an extra fourth and fifth-round pick moving down twice, giving them more opportunities to add depth to the roster. Doing that while still filling a position of need with a high-upside player seems like a winning strategy.
