NFL Analyst Reveals Areas Panthers QB Bryce Young Must Improve

Carolina Panthers rookie quarterback Bryce Young certainly hasn’t been bad in his first season, but he has not been great, either.

In five games, Young has thrown for 967 yards, six touchdowns and four interceptions while completing 63.2 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 78.7. He has also gone 0-5 in his starts, and the Panthers are 0-6 overall.

Obviously, you can’t blame Carolina’s lack of success solely on Young. It just isn’t a very good team, which was why it was able to take Young No. 1 overall back in the spring to begin with.

However, there are certainly areas in which Young can improve, and ESPN analyst Matt Bowen pointed some out recently.

“Young, meanwhile, must play faster and be more decisive as a thrower,” wrote Bowen. “He has averaged just 5.3 yards per attempt (tied for worst) and taken 16 sacks (tied for 11th most). Yes, the Panthers can be better in pass protection, especially on the interior, but there are throws to be made on the tape. Young has to be more willing to cut it loose. And cutting down on the unnecessary movement we are seeing at the top of his drop would improve his eye level in the pocket.”

Bowen was also surprised at Young’s lack of movement outside the pocket, questioning why he has only scrambled eight times this season.

Now, to be fair to Young, he wasn’t much of a runner at Alabama, either. In two years as a starting quarterback for the Crimson Tide, Young only carried the ball 139 times for 162 yards. It seems odd, as Young is known to be very athletic, but scrambling really isn’t his thing. Perhaps the Panthers will incorporate that into his game as he moves forward.

Also, as far as Young’s so-so passing numbers thus far, he doesn’t exactly have a ton of weapons beyond Adam Thielen, so it’s not like Young has a lot of elite-level talent to turn to.

Carolina needs to supply Bryce Young with some better receivers this offseason.

The Panthers will look to pick up their first win when they take on the Houston Texans this Sunday.
