The Pittsburgh Steelers are gearing up for the 2024 NFL season with a revamped quarterback lineup, led by the acquisition of Russell Wilson.
This offseason saw the departure of Kenny Pickett, Mason Rudolph, and Mitchell Trubisky, as they all moved on to new teams through trades or free agency. In their spots, the Steelers secured the services of veteran quarterback Russell Wilson and made a significant trade for former Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields.
As the season approaches, it appears Wilson will take the reins as the starting quarterback for the Steelers in 2024.
However, there’s speculation from Fox Sports host Nick Wright that Wilson might not hold onto the starting position for long, suggesting he could be benched by Week 7 or 8.
“This is a great spot for Justin Fields because Russell Wilson is not good anymore. Yes, once upon a time Russell was dynamic, so I expect Russell to be the Week 1 starter and I expect Justin to be the Week 7 or 8 starter and the starter the rest of the way. That is not so much because I think Justin is a great player – I think he does have a lot of potential and we’ll see if he can finally harness it on a consistent basis. I know what Russell Wilson is right now. I think he’s a quarterback who will be benched by the Pittsburgh Steelers.”
Russell Wilson’s track record speaks volumes, having outperformed Kenny Pickett’s two-year tenure as the Steelers’ quarterback in just one season. However, the question remains whether he can fend off competition from Justin Fields and maintain his starting role throughout the season.
This is going to be an interesting situation to keep a close eye on for the Steelers moving forward.
