The situation between the Indianapolis Colts and Jonathan Taylor has taken yet another turn recently. After Taylor requested a trade from the Colts last month and was denied, the team has given him permission to seek out a landing spot around the league.
There are a few teams that stick out as potential landing spots. The Miami Dolphins, who lost out to the New York Jets in the Dalvin Cook sweepstakes, would make a lot of sense. Their need for a running back upgrade became more dire with rookie Devon Achane suffering a shoulder injury that has left him with a week-to-week diagnosis.
The Philadelphia Eagles have been floated as a landing spot as well. They signed Rashaad Penny and acquired D’Andre Swift in a trade from the Detroit Lions to help replace Miles Sanders. Alas, the injury history for those two is lengthy and they showed interest in Alvin Kamara and Christian McCaffrey last year.
Coming into the offseason seeking offensive upgrades, the Buffalo Bills could join the sweepstakes. They are currently set to rely on James Cook, Damien Harris and Latavius Murray to lead their backfield.
The market for Taylor is going to be a strong one. The Colts should have no issues finding a team that wants to make a deal. However, where they could run into a snag is with the asking price that they have set.
The Colts have no plans on offering Taylor a top-of-the-market contract this offseason; general manager Chris Ballard made that crystal clear at the onset of training camp. There lies the problem with the running back market, in the opinion of Kyle Yates, the Fantasy Football director of Pro Football Network.
Essentially, the Colts want to have their cake and eat it too. While they don’t believe Taylor is worth a big contract, they have set a very high asking price for him. Indianapolis is seeking a first-round pick in return, which encapsulates the current issues with the position. Taylor isn’t the first running back to run into this problem and he certainly won’t be the last.
