NFL Analyst Reveals Major Eagles’ Cut Candidate Entering Camp

The Philadelphia Eagles have one of the more talented and deep offensive units in the NFL. Because of that, some very difficult decisions are on the horizon for general manager Howie Roseman and the front office.

Cut down days in the NFL are never easy, but are a part of the process leading up to the regular season. For the Eagles, it will be especially difficult in 2023 as they could be forced to say goodbye to someone who has been with the franchise for multiple years.

Wide receiver Greg Ward has been suggested as a potential cut candidate in training camp by Glenn Erby of Eagles Wire as he could be on the roster bubble. That is a tough position to break onto the 53-man roster as the Eagles are likely set at their top four spots.

“Philadelphia has ten wide receivers and a dynamic duo of A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith,” writes Erby. “Olamide Zaccheaus was signed to battle Quez Watkins for the third wide receiver spot. At the same time, rookies Jadon Haselwood and Joseph Ngata are big, physical wideouts who could disrupt the roster dynamic.”

A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith are nearly every down players, rarely coming off the field. Behind them in the pecking order for targets are tight end Dallas Goedert and now, likely, running back D’Andre Swift. With Zaccheus and Watkins at No. 3 and No. 4, there isn’t much wiggle room for a player such as Ward.

As pointed out by Erby, Haselwood and Ngata bring something to the table that Ward doesn’t with their size. That is something the Eagles’ coaching staff could work into the game plan as deep ball or red zone targets.

Working against Ward was the fact that his role shrank after 2020. He appeared in all 17 games in 2021 but was on the field for only 22 percent of the offensive snaps after playing 70 percent of them in 2020 and 58 percent in 2019 as a rookie. In 2022 he didn’t appear in a regular season game, spending the season on the Eagles practice squad.

While Ward does have some fans in the organization, Erby believes he will need to have a monster training camp to hold onto a roster spot. His experience as a college quarterback could be something the Eagles find value in as well to keep him around as he could be the third string or emergency signal caller for the team.
