The history between the New York Giants and Saquon Barkley is a lengthy one, but it appears that their relationship may have hit a breaking point.

Barkley has consistently been the standout offensive player for the team, but the financial aspect hasn’t aligned with his expectations. The Giants have chosen not to commit to a long-term contract extension, possibly due to concerns about his injury history.

Additionally, the significant investment made in Daniel Jones, immediately following the franchise tag placement, only strained their rapport further.

Former NFL star Willie Colon shared his perspective, suggesting that the situation has become personal for Barkley, and he should consider all options to leave the team. Speaking on The Carton Show, Colon emphasized that Barkley, a talented running back and a positive locker room presence, seems to be stifled in New York and should explore opportunities with a team that values him.

“I think Saquon Barkley is dying in New York. He’s a hell of a running back and he’s good for the locker room. All that said, I would fight my way out of there.”

However, it’s essential to acknowledge the Giants’ upper hand in this scenario, as Craig Carton pointed out.

The team has the ability to place Barkley under the franchise tag once more, knowing that the threat of a holdout may not be a viable option for him. Holding out could cost Barkley his earnings, as no other NFL team is likely to offer more than the $12 million he could receive as a franchise-tagged player, especially given his injury history.

The NFL is a ruthless business, and while the Giants’ treatment of their star player may not sit well with fans, it doesn’t violate any league rules. This situation underscores the complex dynamics between players and teams in professional sports.
