The Buffalo Bills traded wide receiver Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans earlier this week, and now, they have to find a solution to their issues at the position.
Not only did the Bills send Diggs packing, but they also lost fellow wide out Gabe Davis to the Jacksonville Jaguars in free agency last month.
That leaves Buffalo will Khalil Shakir and Curtis Samuel as its top two receivers, which obviously is not a very enviable situation.
Many are suggesting that the Bills should go out and make a big trade for someone like Cincinnati Bengals star Tee Higgins, but ESPN’s Adam Schefter says that isn’t happening.
Why? Because Buffalo can’t afford it.
Schefter says that the Bills will have to be very economical about how they fill their wide receiver room, noting that the best route is to probably go through the NFL Draft.
He mentions that this is a deep draft class for receivers and that Buffalo may end up being a player for a wide out in the first round later this month.
Trading Diggs results in a $31 million dead cap hit for the Bills, which shows just how dire the situation between Diggs and Buffalo had become.
The Bills have won four straight AFC East division titles and have made five consecutive trips to the playoffs, but it’s going to be difficult for them next season due to all of the talent they have lost over the past month.
Remember: Buffalo also had to release numerous key players in order to get under the salary cap at the beginning of the new league year, so Diggs and Davis were not the team’s only subtractions.
There are still some affordable receiver options available on the open market, and the Bills have been named as a potential landing spot for Odell Beckham Jr.
However, Buffalo certainly isn’t going to acquire a No. 1 receiver in free agency at this point, and, as Schefter points out, trading for one will be exceedingly difficult due to financial constraints.
We’ll see how quickly the Bills can recover from dealing Stefon Diggs.
