The Green Bay Packers and New York Jets will be synonymous during the 2023 season. That is because this offseason marked the end of an era in Green Bay with the team trading future Hall of Famer, quarterback Aaron Rodgers, to New York.
The path has now been cleared for Jordan Love to take over as the starter for the Packers, as he follows a similar start to his career as Rodgers. Love, like Rodgers, sat behind a legend for three seasons before they were traded to the Jets. In Rodgers’ case, it was Brett Favre who headed to New York.
The big return in the Rodgers’ blockbuster was that the Packers will get a first or second-round pick from the Jets in the 2024 NFL Draft depending on how many snaps Rodgers plays during the season. If he plays at least 65 percent, it will be a first-round pick heading to Green Bay.
That stipulation will handcuff the Jets a little bit come the trade deadline. They cannot trade either selection in another deal as the percentage cannot be calculated until the conclusion of the regular season. So, rcon14 of Acme Packing Co. at SB Nation suggested a trade that would alleviate that issue.
They suggested that the Packers could trade left tackle David Bakhtiari to the Jets to remove the stipulation. In addition, the Jets could add another piece of draft capital to sweeten the pot and get a deal done.
“Using the Rich Hill trade value chart, if Green Bay thinks adding Bakhtiari would worsen that first-round pick from say 20 to 26, Green Bay should require an additional third-round pick to make that trade,” ACME’s article explained. “That is because the value difference between 20 and 26 is worth about 46 points, which is the value of [pick No. 89] in the draft. This is just one example.”
By moving Bakhtiari, the Packers would save $21.5 million in 2024. That could be enough incentive to get a deal done, as that kind of savings would help the team fill other holes on the roster.
However, with a young quarterback in Love taking over the offense, having a strong offensive line in front of him is key. The Packers could alleviate some of those salary cap concerns in 2024 by agreeing to an extension with Bakhtiari.
That is a path that would make sense should he be able to stay healthy and productive in 2023. Bakhtiari has already reached All-Pro level production in his career and is someone that the Packers would likely want to keep around should he prove healthy.
